The Worldbuilding Codex

Creating a fantasy world is rarely simple.
At some point, every creator runs into questions they didn’t expect to answer: where does this magic come from? why did this kingdom emerge here? how do these people survive in this environment?

The intention here is to build, over time, a codex as complete as possible about worldbuilding. A place that gathers everything the creation of worlds can involve: from broad concepts like cosmology and geography to smaller details that make the difference, such as economy, materials, beliefs, animals, and conflicts.

Most articles follow a top-down approach: starting with the larger structures of the world and gradually moving toward the elements that bring the setting to life. Still, nothing here is meant to be followed as a rigid manual. Worldbuilding isn’t a checklist, it’s a creative process. Use what makes sense for your world, adapt freely, mix ideas, and discard whatever doesn’t work.

An introduction to worldbuilding and why it matters, exploring how ideas, rules, and themes turn simple concepts into believable and living worlds.

Designed to be system-agnostic, this guide isn’t tied to any specific RPG ruleset. It was created for game masters, writers, and creators who are building entire worlds or just parts of them, whether for campaigns, stories, or personal projects.

Whenever possible, each article will include lists of examples, variations, and practical ideas, meant to help creatively, not to limit. The intention is that you finish a text with new questions, new possibilities, and, most importantly, new ideas.

The codex will be divided into seven main chapters, together exploring everything from the foundations of a world to the systems that sustain it:

  1. World Fundamentals - The core rules that define how the world works.

  2. Cosmology and Dimensions - The structure of the universe, planes of existence, and realities beyond the physical world.

  3. Geography and Climates - Continents, oceans, mountains, and the climate systems that shape the land.

  4. Biomes - Natural regions, ecosystems, and environments. (Content continuously expanding)

  5. Peoples and Societies - Cultures, ethnic groups, governments, and the ways different peoples live and interact.

  6. Living History - Past events, myths, conflicts, and the current state of the world.

  7. World Infrastructure - Economy, materials, transportation, warfare, and the systems that support civilization. (Content continuously expanding)

Each chapter is designed to stand on its own while remaining deeply connected to the others, allowing you to explore the codex in whatever order best suits your world. Some sections will continue to grow over time, reflecting the idea that living worlds are never truly finished.

And if at any point something feels unclear, incomplete, or simply doesn’t make sense, feel free to reach out. Feedback, suggestions, and discussion are always welcome, this codex also grows with its readers and through these exchanges. Send me an Email ;)
